Murder One
It seemed like a good idea at the time
In the beginning
So, this is where it all began as a musician. If I believe the date on the cassette I was probably around 18 and being playing bass for maybe a bit more than a year - it is hard to remember. I'd saved a bit of money and bought a Squire Jazz bass and my folks paid for a few lessons... as the story goes you only do a few and then you're in a band, After saving a bit more - I didn't earn a lot but was still living mostly at home - I found a deal on an old Acoustic amp and a monstrous purple cab with two 150W Celestion speakers in it. We were mostly playing the party circuit, rocking up and playing for anyone that would have us.
We were a three piece: guitar and vocals by Darren Wright, myself on bass, and a drummer, who's name I forget... It's been a while. We would get around in an old VW Kombi, which was the fashion at the time. We were mostly doing "covers", everything from Hendrix to the Stooges, ok, didn't get far, but basically finding our way and exploring blues, garage and Detroit sounds. Needless to say, fun was had by all. For whatever reason we eventually went our own ways. Darren was in an early iteration of The Hellmen, and I ran away to the city.
Somewhere in there we managed a super-primitive recording. I still recall this vividly, we were setup up in the drummer's bedroom in a circle with a microphone hanging from the light fixture. The mic went straight into a cassette player for recording. I still have the tape and managed to digitise it. This is the sort of thing that needs to be kept alive, despite its "rawness". One is a cover of Johnny B. Goode and the other is a cover of The Stooges TV Eye, but more in the style of Radio Birdman, but maybe just a bit faster... because.
